KINFOLK Event – May 2014

Kinfolk

On May 17th, we hosted our 1st of two Kinfolk events for the year.  This one was inspired by the Spirit of the Sea.  Seafood and salt infusions took center stage as guests from around the world gathered at a private home in Ojai, California.

table no people

The setting is always comfortable, welcoming and never precious or too showy.  These events are about creating a space for friends, new and old, to gather and share food and conversation with each other.

tablesetting

Table settings are often fresh cut flowers or other plants gathered from the garden.  For this event we created succulent boats to emulate the wilds of the sea.

FBoven

The Food, lovingly prepared by Clark Staub of Full of Life Flatbread.  Clark prepared our beautiful meal on his portable wood-burning “flatbread” oven, shaded by the giant oak trees Ojai is known for.

As each course was served, Clark explained the origin of the food and personal stories of the sea.

Bread

Clark is an expert chef and baker, and served us bread cooked earlier that day.  Delicious.

Buffet

Each course was served family style, adding to the casual and comfortable setting of the afternoon.

Chocolate

For dessert, we enjoyed chocolate truffles made of Tahitian Vanilla, Cardamon and Sea Salt, hand crafted by Chocolat du CaliBressan in Carpenteria.

Salt vessels (shown below) were donated for the event by Ojai ceramicist P.Lyn Middleton of P.Space.

Going with the Salt theme we had the wonderful opportunity to take part in a Salt Infusion Workshop hosted by Ojai’s own, Sheila Piala of A Salty Infusion

SaltyInfusion

Sheila collected and dried all local, organic, herbs, flowers and citrus for us to use in our custom made salt infusions.  The palette created by these flavors was awe inspiring.

Each guest left with a jar of their own creation.  What a treat.

A very special thank you goes out to Kelli and Ajay Sahgal for opening their beautiful home for this event.  To Fran Gealer who did most of the photography, capturing those special moments, unnoticed.  Sheila Piala for sharing her Grandmothers special recipes for creating salt infusions. To my family for being so supportive throughout the  planning, preparation and day of the event.  And last but not least, to Julie Pointer, my Kinfolk mentor, inspiration and friend.  I am truly grateful to be part of the Kinfolk community as host of these events in the lovely community of Ojai, California.

Kinfolk Flower Potluck

KINFOLK_table

In May, we had the privilege of co-hosting KINFOLK‘s Flower Potluck and Dinner event at a private home in Upper Ojai.  KINFOLK has brilliantly created the opportunity for local communities around the world to host their own events based on themes that KINFOLK creates, supports & inspires.  Here at Modern Folk we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to participate with such a wonderful, like-minded community of people.  The following images are moments captured during this very special evening.

KINFOLK_flowerclass

Guests of this event were asked to bring a bouquet of flowers to share with other participants the result being some pretty magical flower arrangements created on tables made of reclaimed wood and bales of hay, overlooking the beautiful Topa-Topa mountains.  And what we loved most about this aspect of the evening is that it allowed total strangers to meet and have wonderful conversations while making some truly beautiful flower arrangements.

KINFOLK_Jodi

Jodi Brandt of Curly Willow here in Ojai, provided expert guidance as everyone worked thoughtfully on their individual creations.

Here are a few of the wonderful arrangements guests created from the collective flower assortment provided – potluck style and from the generous donation of 50flowers.com.

Karen Stewart (shown here) of Stewart+Brown an organic clothing company located in Ventura, joined us along with her husband Howard Brown.  Karen also created a gorgeous runner for the dinner table made from organic fabric scraps, collaged in a beautiful wabi-sabi kind of way.

Once we finished our flower arrangements, we headed for some light appetizers prepared by Jeri Oshima  and refreshing drinks provided by Lori’s Lemonade and Art in the Age.

Overall it was such a memorable evening and we are so grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with our community on behalf of KINFOLK.  If you’re interested in attending one of these Ojai events be sure to check with our Facebook page, sign up for our newsletter or KINFOLK/events.  Our next one will be in July – a HONEY HARVEST.  Exact date and location tbd.

Lucky Uschi – trunk show – April 28th, 2013

LU_portrait_900

We are so excited to be hosting the Spring 13 collection of LuckyUschi apparel and home accessories with a Trunk Show on Sunday, April 28th, 11-4pm at the Modern Folk Living patio.  Refreshments will be served. Please join us.

LU_pillows

Uschi’s path has been infused with eclectic spiritual traditions since birth. From early years traveling Europe with her parents, and eventual migration west, she was educated within the teachings of philosopher J.Krishnamurti, at his Oak Grove school in Ojai, California.

After completing her schooling Uschi was recruited to a job in the fashion world, working for a reputable high fashion company and assisting stylists on celebrity events. After 7 years in a very glamorous and high paced lifestyle, she felt the need for change, and a return to her roots in spirituality and mysticism, but wasn’t sure where to begin whatever would come next.

Returning to Ojai in 2001, she met her dear friend Kira Ryder,  who had just opened Lulu Bandha’s Yoga studio. Joining Kira in the budding community she was creating, and helping her organize events and workshops, Uschi  found a fertile soil to blossom in, and a community of friends who  encouraged her to believe in her dreams.

LU_boat_900 A lifelong wish to journey to India finally happened in the Winter of 2007, when she went on a trip hosting students from  the Krishnamurti schools in  Rishi Valley, Bangalore, and Varanasi. She was so incredibly inspired, and it was clear she had found a home, and a new intention in her life.

Returning to India in the Summer of 2008, she began to work with women in Varanasis outlying villages, contributing to a budding women’s empowerment project and developing a production center and headquarters for a fair-trade clothing line. The unit Uschi has cultivated trains women in crafts by recognizing their inherent talents as they develop new skills, giving them income generating work and cultivating monetary and emotional support for them within their families.

LU_womenscenterCurrently based in India 9 months of the year, Uschi’s work has grown considerably over the last years and the community of women has blossomed into neighboring villages. She returns to the US every Spring and Fall to be with friends, and help host the International Ojai Yoga Crib and local trunk shows.
