On May 17th, we hosted our 1st of two Kinfolk events for the year. This one was inspired by the Spirit of the Sea. Seafood and salt infusions took center stage as guests from around the world gathered at a private home in Ojai, California.
The setting is always comfortable, welcoming and never precious or too showy. These events are about creating a space for friends, new and old, to gather and share food and conversation with each other.
Table settings are often fresh cut flowers or other plants gathered from the garden. For this event we created succulent boats to emulate the wilds of the sea.
The Food, lovingly prepared by Clark Staub of Full of Life Flatbread. Clark prepared our beautiful meal on his portable wood-burning “flatbread” oven, shaded by the giant oak trees Ojai is known for.
As each course was served, Clark explained the origin of the food and personal stories of the sea.
Clark is an expert chef and baker, and served us bread cooked earlier that day. Delicious.
Each course was served family style, adding to the casual and comfortable setting of the afternoon.
For dessert, we enjoyed chocolate truffles made of Tahitian Vanilla, Cardamon and Sea Salt, hand crafted by Chocolat du CaliBressan in Carpenteria.
Salt vessels (shown below) were donated for the event by Ojai ceramicist P.Lyn Middleton of P.Space.
Going with the Salt theme we had the wonderful opportunity to take part in a Salt Infusion Workshop hosted by Ojai’s own, Sheila Piala of A Salty Infusion
Sheila collected and dried all local, organic, herbs, flowers and citrus for us to use in our custom made salt infusions. The palette created by these flavors was awe inspiring.
Each guest left with a jar of their own creation. What a treat.
Delicious beverages were provided by Municipal Wine Makers in Santa Barbara
And mixed drinks created by artisanal spirits, donated by Art in the Age.
A snapshot of some of the quests who joined us for the day
A very special thank you goes out to Kelli and Ajay Sahgal for opening their beautiful home for this event. To Fran Gealer who did most of the photography, capturing those special moments, unnoticed. Sheila Piala for sharing her Grandmothers special recipes for creating salt infusions. To my family for being so supportive throughout the planning, preparation and day of the event. And last but not least, to Julie Pointer, my Kinfolk mentor, inspiration and friend. I am truly grateful to be part of the Kinfolk community as host of these events in the lovely community of Ojai, California.
